Fine ebony & boxwood weighted staunton chess set, white king stamped 'J.JAQUES LONDON', kingside rooks & knights with crown stamps to tops. Comes in original mahogany box with green baize interior and small jaques label to lid, the early club sets like these had a larger paper trade label to the base of box but usually they are missing due to obvious ware, they were changed to be placed in the lid of the box at the end of the 1850s to presumbaly stop the label being worn away, box still has the outline of the old label to base.The set is now called by contempory collectors the Morphy style of knights. .Set is a great example of the first line of Clubsize Jaques ever manufactured with a great polished finish.
