Finest quality carved ivory set, set was produced in Canton for the export market. One side stained red other side left natural, the pieces are of the highest standard of carving each piece carved on large deep carved decorated bases, the pieces are carved from one piece of ivory and not fixed to bases. The Kings & Queens carved as emporers & empresses with opposing courts, the detail of the carving is superb with fine pierced vases to the tops of the rooks, the pawns as 4 with spear and 4 with sword + shield on red side, the white side with 4 musket and 4 sword + shield all shields being decorated with grinning faces. White knights as mounted warriors with spears, red knights with sword & shield, bishops carved as mandarins.
