Fine turned & carved bone bust chess set carved in Dieppe France, the white side representing the Europeans , Kings & Queens carved as Monarchs with crowns, bishops carved as Fools with large noses & clutching clay pipes, Bishops were often carved to represent fools in this period making fun of the Church as an institution, knights as mounted horsemen wearing french revolutionary hats, rooks as towers, pawns as footmen. Red side stained red with white decoration representing the Moors, King & Queen as Moorish Leaders, Bishops wearing tri-corn hats, Knights as mounted horsemen wearing french revelutionary hats, rooks as Towers, Pawns as Footmen.


Set is a very fine example of the master carvers of Dieppe with unusual detailed red & white decoration to the red pieces fine carving to both front & back of the pieces.
