Fine English ivory Chess set one side stained red other side left natural , Kings with double pierced galleries, queens with single pieced galleries, bishops with large open mitres, knights as fine carved horses heads with excellent detail, rooks as towers.


Comes in original slide lid box.


This design of set has come to be known as a Calvert pattern named after the maker Calvert, although it is now thought by many contemporary collectors that these sets were made and most likely designed by William or Thomas Lund. The style of knight would certainly suggest this. Set is of a high standard of workmanship the knights being particularly fine.
