Fine turned & carved ivory Staunton chess set one side stained red other side left natural. Set of good quality with pieces of equal proportions, excellent carved knights. Comes in original mahogany lift top box.

Interesting rare set , this maker more commonly making wooden stauntons see ref 344 & 387 also last image shows ref 344 king.

There are two main theories on the identity of the maker, firstly these were made by F.H. Ayres of London a large toy & games maker of the early part of the 20th century, the other being these were made by Jaques in competition with the many native and foreign staunton makers appearing in the early 20th century.
