Good early English "petal" type ivory playing set, one side stained red other side left natural. with king & queens with "petal" galleries, bishops with open mitres, knights as carved horses heads in the traditional 18th Century manner, rooks as turrets on stems.

These rare sets the forerunner of the Calvert pattern sets (see Ref 417).
