Fine turned & carved ivory chess set one side stained red other side left natural, all pieces profousely carved foliage decoration to bodies, raised carved disc bases.

These sets are often referred to as Kashmir sets, although Kashmir never had a centre for ivory work and historicly was renowned for painted & varnished wood pieces.


The most likely areas for sets made of this type would have been Murshidabad in the early to mid 19th century later ivory carvers moved to Berhampur which established itself in the mid 19th century for ivory carving or Vizagapatam in southern India which was a main ivory carving centre in the 18th & 19th century.
