Fine English turned & carved bone chess set, one side stained dark brown other side left natural. kings with cross & crown, , queens with feathers, bishops with mitres, knights as arched horse’s heads , rooks with flag pole finials & pierced decorated turrets, pawns with concentric turned decorated bodies. The main pieces with carved & pierced decorated bodies.
The chess set comes with a same date period fine south German walnut & ebonised games box , the interior inlaid for backgammon, the exterior with walnut & boxwood inlaid chess board the reverse inlaid for the game nine men morris.
These fine carved bone chessmen were classified as the Spanish Pulpit set by mid 20th century collectors.
Hence the name has not changed in its classification although it s now widely accepted that these sets originate from Britain.
