Ref1029 English “Upright” pattern set by Jaques
Circa 1850-1870
Fine turned & carved chess set one side ebony other side in boxwood. This particular pattern is known as the “Upright” set , Lord Jon Hay designed this pattern in 1840 , it became a popular style with many good makers making these attractive sets.
This particular upright set would have been made by Jaques of London as the style of knight and shape of the pieces are identical to the Upright illustrated in Jaques pattern book.
Set retains an excellent French polish finish.
