REF1037 Fine “Charlamagne” set & board
Circa 1840-1860
Fine carved figural chess set , the light side carved in boxwood on solid dark wood stands , the other side carved in dark wood, the pieces carved as Kings & queens , pawns as 19th century countrymen with simple costume , knights as superb sitting horses, rooks as pierced towers.
A very fine carved set, these sets were first categorized as German although recent research may indicate they are of Swiss origin.

Set comes with a fine Biedermeier continental mahogany chess and backgammon board box same period as chess set, the exterior with symmetrical patterned mahogany , the board inlaid in satinwood & rosewood.
With silvered escutcheon and key.
The interior inlaid in various woods as a backgammon board.
The reverse of box inlaid as a nine men morris board.
