Circa 1830-1850

Fine turned & carved ivory playing set, one side stained red other side left natural. Kings with maltese crosses, rooks as towers surrmounted by flags, knights as fine detailed carved horses heads.

Recent research by Peter Armit has helped greatly in identifying the difference in design from Merrifield sets to other similar makers.

Set is a fine example , a good size with excellent uniformity to the pieces and a high standard of carving in the knights detail.
