Circa 1850
Large export Indian Ivory chess set in the “Peyps” style , one side stained red other side left natural.
Kings & queens with carved ornate carved ball heads , rooks as towers on stems. Knights as carved horses heads with ranes.
An attractive playing set that has become classified as the “Pepys” type set due to a similar set being presented to Samual Peyps by King James II , the set now housed in the London Museum.
