Ebony & boxwood Staunton set, white king stamped “J.JAQUES LONDON” . King side rooks & knights with crown stamps, all pieces with green baize. Set comes in original Carton Pierre casket with original 1849 part label to underside & original 1849 Staunton’s chess-player handbook. Set retains an excellent original French polished finish. A rare and early Jaques chess set the style of knights and white Jaques paper label makes this set first year of manufacture 1849. The black knights carved tops are boxwood stained black , this practice is only seen on Jaques sets of 1849, after the first year black knight tops were carved in solid ebony . All the sets go through a professional workshop before they go online, any minor faults such as chips or splits are restored, therefore the sets are all in excellent condition.
