REF1640 Large fine “Edinboro” Pattern Set & Box
Circa 1840-1870
Fine turned & carved English ivory chess set, one stained red other side left natural.
Pieces with original blue felted bases , fine carved knights and excellent turned pieces.
Comes in original mahogany lift top box with blue felted interior. The box with lift out compartment holding one side of the pieces.
The design thought to have been designed by Lord Jon Hay in the 1830′s-40′s.
The name “Edinboro” was used by Jaques in thier adverts, this style of set can also be reffered to as Northern Upright or Edinburgh.
This classic turned and pillar / plinth bodied set were made by many good English makers from the 1840′s upto the early 1900′s with Jaques adverts from the early 1900′s still advertisng this style of set.
