Circa 1850-1890

Irish Killarney chessmen one side in yew wood other side in arbutus wood. The turned pieces with attractive slender stems , kings & queens with single turned collars to mid stem, knights as horsese heads, rooks as towers with a turned collar to base of stem.

Set comes with original yew wood board box. The exterior with inlaid yew wood & arbutus chess board. The opposing chess board sides border inlaid with boxwood cartouches of Muckross Abbey in Killarney & Killarney Castle. The edges of the border with inlaid boxwood fern leaves. The interior inlaid to represent a backgammon board with two central cartouches inlaid in boxwood and fruitwood representing harps.

A fine example of the Killarney ware which was prevelent from the 18th century untill the early 20th century making many souvenir pieces and fine furniture using materials of the Killarney lakes area county Kerry Ireland.

All the sets go through a professional workshop before they go online, any minor faults such as chips or splits are restored, therefore the sets are all in excellent condition.
