REF1884 Large Jaques Edinbro pattern chessmen
Circa 1860-1890
Fine large English ebony & boxwood playing set. The design known as the “Edinbro Club” chessmen. Jaques advertised these fine sets in five sizes four wood and one size in ivory.
This set is size no. 4 the largest wooden set and in the 1880s would have retailed for 18 Shillings & 6 pence! It is interesting to note that Jaques adverised all these wooden sets with a french polished finish. The advert also shows that the Edinbro & St George’s patterns were named after the clubs in Edinburgh & London.
Interesting to note the “St George’s Club Pattern” largest set was “club size” .
An excellent example of large size , retains original French polished finish, knights fine detailed , the manes carved in the same style as the St George’s club sets with large bunched partings.
Set comes with a copy of the Jaques advert shown.
Chessmen come with pine dovetailed chess box same period as the chessmen.
Kings 13 CM Tall
