Circa 1855 - 1860

Fine weighted ebony & boxwood tournament size Staunton chess set by Jaques of London.

The white king stamped “JAQUES LONDON” , king side rooks & knights with crown stamps. All pieces with green baize & loaded bases.

Set retains an excellent original french polished finish.

Set comes in original Carton pierre casket with Jaques yellow paper trade label to underside.

The Casket in the Neo Gothic style with chess board motifs and chess figures to the sides, the interior lined in burgundy velvet. The lid with tooled leather decoration.

Kings 9 cm Tall.

The design of this set is known in the modern codex as the “Anderssen” . The practice of adding historic chess champions names to styles of Jaques chessmen is a modern practice which Jaques never used historically , although it is a great system to easily help identify specific Jaques Staunton Chessmen.

These are genuine antiques! Great to play and a good investment.
