Chessmen come in original Spanish mahogany fitted box by Jaques of London. With paper trade label to underside. The interior with two fitted trays for both the boxwood and ebony pieces.
These superior cases were mostly used for the ivory sets of the 1850s to 1870s , the design of these cases are slightly different than this 1900s case with different design in the cartouche and lock plate. The mitre joins to the edge of the cases are more prominent than the earlier cases both a reflection of the differences in the standard Club boxes also.
The design of this set is known in the modern codex as the “Marshall” . The practice of adding historic chess champions names to styles of Jaques chessmen is a modern practice which Jaques never used historically , although it is a great system to easily help identify specific Jaques Staunton Chessmen.
These are genuine antiques! Great to play and a good investment.
