Fine carton pierre & leather board stamped “Leuchars Piccadilly” the exterior with carton Pierre decoration in the Neogothic style, the inerior with green & tan leather chess board.
These fine boards were first made by Leuchars of London to compliment the Jaques chess sets. The Carton Pierre board matches with the Jaques Carton Pierre casket that the chessmen were sold in. Boards were also illustrated with the Jaques sets in advertisements.
Interesting to note many contemporary chess collectors believe the green squared boards were made for the Jaques wooden sets and the red squared boards for ivory Jaques sets.
