Circa 1700 - 1780
Fine German Chessmen in the Selenus style, one side boxwood other side in palisander wood. kings with triple galleries , queens with double galleries, bishops with opposing wood mitres, knights as carved horses heads and rooks as attractive towers on stems.
Interesting to note the label reads in most part. ‘ this chess set originates from our ancestor the court hunter Kathen.” Hofjäger which translates literally as Court hunter is a very old term for somebody who was in a prince’s retinue, maybe a gamekeeper ( Leibjäger ) or some such. This part of the label dates 1838 making the chessmen earlier as the message states the chessmen originated from an ancestor. Interesting it has a stamp with Familien besitz ‘ family possession ‘ dated 1955, perhaps for the division of a will.
Kings 7.2 CM Tall
Chessmen come in original softwood lift top box, with papered exterior and interior , the inside of lid with two dates 1838 & 1946
