REF3008 English Chessmen & box by Merrifield
Circa 1820-1840

Fine turned ivory chessmen, one side stained red other side left natural. Knights as fine carved horses heads typical of the Merrifield style. the triple ring turn beneath Kings & queens galleries also a decoration that is common on Merrifield ivory sets.

Chessmen comes in mahogany slide lid box also a booklet “Chess-players handbook” dated 1838 in pen. The book accompanied the set.

Merrifield is one of the famous turners, operating in London in the first half of the 19th century. Making fine sets untill the mid 19th century.
