REF3024 Rare English Staunton chessmen & box.
Circa 1850 - 1855
English Staunton pattern chessmen , one side ebony other side boxwood. The pieces with attractive wide bases, fine detailed knights, Kings with ball tops. All pieces with green felted bases. Retains original French polished finish.
An interesting set, the quality , style of bishops, kings and pawns design are exact to early Jaques Staunton sets from the early 1850’s , the box also is exact to Jaques boxes. The knights although not standard Jaques knights from this period are similar in design to St George sets designed by Jaques.
The Late 19th century maker B&Co. used ball tops for Kings in there pattern but the over all design of pieces and lack of the typical B & Co. screw thread construction indicate this set to be earlier and from the Jaques workshops.
Set is a tournament size same dimensions as Jaques Stauntons of this period. King lacks slightly in height due to top finial difference.
Kings 8.5 CM
