Rare Italian Chessmen one side boxwood other side ebonised boxwood. Attractive style of Chessmen known as the “Piemontesi” type with attractive thick disc base pieces, kings and queens with cut collars , all the pieces turned & carved from single pieces of wood, including the knights and rooks. This is a good example using a good seasoned boxwood , with excellent patiana.
The set retains anatural polished finish with rich patination.
A rare set , this style was predominantly from North Italy , coming in different qualites from cheaper woods such as fir or birch to the more expensive and more robust boxwood.
Kings 5.8 CM Tall
Set comes in a continental European lift top box of similar period.
