REF3092 Fine Chessmen & Box by Merrifield
Circa 1820-1830

Large turned & carved chessmen . One side rosewood other side boxwood. Pieces with fine turned bodies.

Knights as fine carved horses heads typical of the Merrifield style.

Chessmen come in mahogany original lift top box with Merrifield paper trade label. The mahogany box with bone escutcheon typical of the early 1800s.

Merrifield labelled sets are extremely with only a few found in the last decades.

Set with excellent patination, rosewood pieces with rich grain , uniformity of pieces and depth of turning typical of a top London maker.

Merrifield is one of the famous London turners with workshops in London in the first half of the 19th century. Making fine sets untill the mid 19th century.
