Ebony & boxwood Royal pattern set by British Chess Company of Stroud Glos. Knights heads in Xylonite. King side Rooks with crown stamps to tops, King side knights with crown stamps to bases.
Set retains an excellent French polished finish. All pieces with green baize bases.
Set comes in original pine dove tailed lift top box with BCC Royal pattern paper trade label to lid.
This set is BCC size number 4. King is 9 cm Tall.
There have been two excellent publications recently on BCC sets, see”JAQUES AND BRITISH CHESS COMPANY CHESS SETS by Alan Fersht” also “THE BRITISH CHESS COMPANY compiled and written by Mick Deasey and Guy Lyons”.
This particular design was registered in 1891 , the knights with large manes and good detail are typical of the early BCC sets. The set is rare in comparison to other makers of the period as they were not made in great numbers , the early style was made for three to four years in production.

All the sets go through a professional workshop before they go online, any minor faults such as chips or splits are restored, therefore the sets are all in excellent condition.
