Irish Killarney chessmen one side in yew wood other side in arbutus wood. The turned pieces with attractive slender stems , kings & queens with turned beehive shaped bodies, , knights as arched horses heads, rooks as towers , pawns with fine turned bodies.

A fine example being of large size, unusual turned bodies , large fine turned pawns most killarney sets have pawns of lesser detail, the beehive bodies to kings & queens are of a more intricate turned shape than the more common pattern Killarney chessmen.
Pieces retain orignal patina.

Set comes with Killarney arbutus wood board box of the same period as the chessmen. The exterior with inlaid yew wood & arbutus chess board. The border inlaid with clover & fern decoration in boxwood. The interior with inlaid backgammon board.

A fine example of Killarney ware which was prevelent from the 18th century untill the early 20th century making many souvenir pieces and fine furniture using local woods of the Killarney lakes area county Kerry Ireland.
