English weighted Staunton pattern chessmen by Ayres of London. One side in boxwood opposing side in ebony. Kings side knights & rooks with crown stamps. The bases loaded and felted. Set retains original french polished finish.
An attractive turned set with good weight. These sets were good rivals to the fine Jaques Staunton sets of the same period , well tunred & carved with French polished finish and also coming in mahogany lift top boxes.
Set comes in original mahogany lift top box with green baize lined interior.
Chessmen cme with a similar period English oak, mahogany & satinwood inliad chess board with attractive banded inliad border.
Kings 10 CM Tall Board 48.5 CM , Squares 4.8 CM
These fine Staunton sets were made by Ayres of London and retailed by many sports and games outlets across Britian including Army & Navy Stores.
All the sets go through a professional workshop before they go online, any minor faults such as chips or splits are restored, therefore the sets are all in excellent condition.
