The chessmen belonged to Charles Dickens Jr eldest son of Charles Dickens and was passed down the family to one of his Grand children Stuart Dickens.
The chessmen come with original signed letter from Stuart Dickens verifying the chessmen as an heirloom of the Dickens family. Although Stuart Dickens recalls that Charles Dickens passed the chessmen to Dickens Jr which by dating the set is incorrect the chessmen would have been purchased by Dickens Jr as Charles Dickens. had passed. please see Stuart’s letter in images.
The chessmen also with signed receipt from the Jewellers who sold the set on Stuarts Behalf dated 1974.
The design of this set is known in the modern codex as the “Pre-Hartson” . The practice of adding historic chess champions names to styles of Jaques chessmen is a modern practice which Jaques never used historically , although it is a great system to easily help identify specific Jaques Staunton Chessmen.
