REF3484 Fine Dieppe Bust Set & Board
Circa 1800 - 1830

Fine carved French bust set , turned & carved in bone , one side stained red other side left natural. The white pieces representing European figures , bishops carved as fools “fou” , knights as horses, pawns wearing Napolionic helmets, rooks as slender turned turrets with brick work decoration and the kings and queens as European monarchs.

The red side as Moorish figures , king & queen as Moorish monarchs, bishops as clerics, knights as horses, pawns as turbaned bust figures and rooks as slender towers.

The “Dieppe School” of carving flourished in the French port town. From the 17th century onwards . Known for its expertise in the carft of carving and scuplture.

Chessmen come with a continental period late 18th / early 19th Century oak games box , the interior with inlaid backgammon board in satin birch & ebony , exterior with inlaid ebony & satinwood chess board to reverse inlaid nine men morris board.

Board box retains original polished finish.

Kings 7.5 CM tall / Rook 8.5 CM Tall.

All the sets go through a professional workshop before they go online, any minor faults such as chips or splits are restored, therefore the sets are all in excellent condition.
