English ebony & boxwood Staunton pattern chessmen by Jaques of London. White king stamped “JAQUES LONDON” , king side rooks & knights with crown stamps. Pieces with felted bases.
Kings 9 CM Tall Board 47 CM Squares 5.4 CM
Set retains original French polished finish.
Comes in original mahogany slide lid box with felt lined interior. Jaques paper trade label to lid.
Chessmen come with same period English mahogany framed chess board , the ebonised mahogany frame with walnut & satinwood inlaid chess board . The board retains original French polished finish.
The design of this set is known in the modern codex as the “Lasker” . The practice of adding historic chess champions names to styles of Jaques chessmen is a modern practice which Jaques never used historically , although it is a great system to easily help identify specific Jaques Staunton Chessmen.
These are genuine antiques! Great to play and a good investment.
