Circa 1860-1900
Fine turned & carved English chess set, one side in boxwood other side of ebony.
The design thought to have been designed by Lord Jon Hay in the 1830′s-40′s.
The name “Edinboro” was used by Jaques in thier adverts, this style of set can also be referred to as Northern Upright or Upright.
This classic turned pillar / plinth bodied set were made by good English makers from the 1840′s up to the early 1900′s with Jaques adverts from the early 1900′s still advertising this style of set.
Chessmen come with same period mahogany lift top chess box.
The pieces come with same period English ebonised mahogany framed chess board , the squares inlaid in satinwood & ebony squares.
