Fine ebony & boxwood tournament size Staunton chess set , both kings stamped “JAQUES LONDON” kingside rooks & knights with crown stamps.

Set comes in original mahogany slide lid box with Jaques paper trade label to lid.

Kings 9 cm Tall

The box comes with same period original pamphlet. “RULES of Glasgow Ladies Chess Club” (x 2)

The box stamped ” G.L.C.C. MISS E GIBB, CHAMPION, 1917.”

The Glasgow Ladies Chess Club (G.L.C.C.) Champion of 1917 was Miss Ellison Gibb . Ellison was a member of the Gibb family , an important family in the progression of chess in Scotalnd and of the Suffragette movement.

Glasgow Ladies Chess Club was established in 1905, for further information on the Gibb family please click “CHESS SCOTLAND”

Ellison Gibb was a strong player, drawing with Blackburne and beating Boris Kostich.
